AIM
This study asserts the pivotal role of women in driving sustainable prosperity in Africa through the establishment of resilient and circular economies. By placing emphasis on the exceptional capabilities of women, we aim to underscore their potential as the primary drivers of positive change across socio-economic and cultural dimensions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
We take a multidisciplinary approach that involves analyzing socio-economic and cultural factors, reviewing policies, vernacular and indigenous practices, and case scenarios of the built environment at the scale of villages or townships. Our focus is on identifying key strategies that lead to sustainable and circular economies by examining successful initiatives led by women in urban, peri-urban, and rural areas. We collect qualitative insights through surveys and interviews with women who actively engaged in these initiatives, giving us a comprehensive understanding of their experiences.
RESULTS
Women have been instrumental in driving community based renewable energy projects and implementing innovative waste management strategies, which have contributed to the growth of circular economies. This demonstrates their aptitude for building collaborative relationships, fostering entrepreneurship, and effecting long-lasting positive transformations.
