Sustainability Initiatives

  • KitchenPOD: The KitchenPOD project provides food street vendors with a sanitary and safe environment to produce local and traditional staples. The project begins with a competition open to UVG members to produce a safe storage, production, sanitation, and point-of-sale system in a rapidly deployable and panelized solution that is self-sufficient in power and water.
  • Safe growing spaces for female farmers: With alliance partner Nua Kike, a Nairobi based community organization, UVG will help map safe practices and spaces in three Kenyan farming communities, and identify replicable practices that can supply and transform locally-grown products into value-added products and services.
  • Aquaponics: With alliance partner RUDF, a Gauteng, South Africa based nonprofit company, UVG has the opportunity to build a vertical farm with farm-to-table supply-chain: rowing feed, Hydroponic food production, post-production and distribution to local markets and eateries. This is a program available to members to deliver a vocational training program in urban vertical farming.
  • Waste-to-Energy: With alliance partners RUDF and GIG of Gauteng, South africa, UVG is developing a multi-sector partnership to supply communities with jobs in renewable energy, waste management and transformation of waste-to-energy through pyrolysis. These tend to be very large, multi-stakeholder and multi-generational projects.
